toy kitchen set with Hello Kitty and another cartoon cat on the package
Hello Kitty and Spaz Cat? or Winky Cat?

toy kitchen set with Snoopy and a duck on the package
Snoopy and Random Duck?

toy race car labeled "alacrity"
Alacrity? “Brisk and cheerful readiness.” I guess it fits.

toy houses labeled "angry birds"
We find that they are putting “Angry Birds” on everything, whether relevant or not. “Welcome to my little world. Let’s play together.”

toy train
“Train Energy Powerful: Too courageous to be met with”

Serving spoon, anyone?

Sad to see the Kitch Go

We stopped by Lamcy Plaza last night. Lamcy is a unique mall, or was. It had truly eclectic decor. When you first walked in, you saw a waterfall that stretched over all three floors.

(2009)

To the right there was a robotic clown climbing up and down a rope. And, behind you, over the entrance was the Tower Bridge, a medieval castle also stretching up three floors.

I didn’t check for the clown last night, but I don’t remember seeing him and I think he may already be gone. The waterfall looked like this:

structure covered in canvas

The signs said “coming soon” a new passager elevator. OH NO!

t-shirt with a scantily clad woman and lettering stating Hawaii hula hula 1968 aloha girls presents wild waves and hazy days

Not culturally sensitive, to say the least.

department store poster showing a male model wearing a plaid shirt and a sleeveless down vest

Didn’t we get over this fashion statement back in the 1980′s? Plaid shirt and down vest? Really?

colorful, unlined rain coats on the store rack

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, these are unlined rain coats being sold in an arid desert country. When it rains here, and it does, you don’t go out for a stroll. It rains hard and there is thunder and lightening. People have been struck dead while walking in the rain.

dish scrub sponge on a handle shaped like Diana Ross with the sponge as her afro hairdo

This just amazes. It is a dish scrub sponge shaped like Diana Ross with the sponge serving as her afro hairdo.

Joys of Shopping

The joys of discount store shopping in Fujairah match those of doing it in Dubai. Here’s a few highlights from today’s adventure.

store shelf full of realistic hand guns

First, some quite realistic looking toy handguns and plastic rifles. I’m fairly sure that these have been eradicated from American store shelves.

store aisle full of Barbie doll imitations

Not far away are the Barbie wannabes. There were some brunettes in the bunch, but they were all fair of complexion.

coffee mug that includes a spoon

This “one piece mug” apparently comes with two pieces – mug and spoon.

baskets that look like they are made of popsickle sticks

If you wondered where all those summer camp popsickle stick craft projects went, here they are.

laundry detergent boxes resembling Tide

Do these remind you of any well known detergent brand? Maybe it wouldn’t be so obvious if they weren’t displayed side by side.

One of These Things is not Like the Others

Let’s play a game.

grocery fruit section with sign for "kaka fruit"

Can you find the Kaka Fruit?

I think, by elimination, I narrowed it down to the persimmons.

(If you don’t see any humor in “kaka fruit,” allow me to explain that “kaka” in some countries is slang for poop.)

Yes, here’s the solution to that gift giving conundrum you’ve been struggling with – a horse lamp.

a life-size horse statue with a lamp coming out of it's head

We took this picture months ago. It was part of some shopping promotional. A completely coordinated living room was placed in the hallway of the mall.

sideview of the horse lamp

What you can’t see in these pictures is that the horse is anatomically correct, including an anus. He’s not overly endowed – wouldn’t want to be tacky, after all.
