Mashup or What?

Fujairah streets are under major construction and have been for most of the year. It is much needed, but makes it even more interesting to navigate the town than it was. Fujairah is not laid out in a system of rectangular streets and intersections. It is a web of diagonal streets and roundabouts. So, even when things are normal and not under construction one has to zig zag across town.

We came across this last night while negotiating a rather challenging detour. The construction of this villa looks standard except for the upside down ionic capitals that have been tacked onto the fence. I’m curious to see what more this will involve.

Water Overhead

small water heater installed in ceiling space

We are having water heater fun this week. Even though this is a new building and this water heater is only about 2 years old, it decided to spring a leak. This is extra fun, because water heaters are installed in ceiling spaces. Each bathroom and the kitchen have a small water heater rather than having one large one for the whole apartment. I don’t know how widespread this practice is in the world, but in the States houses and apartments usually have one large water heater installed in a closet or garage area. It wouldn’t occur to Americans to put something like this in the ceiling area. Just last month a 5 year old girl in Ajman was killed by a falling water heater. Placing a heavy water filled tank over your head just doesn’t seem smart.

So, the bathroom is off limits until we can find a maintenance request form and get the ball rolling toward some repairs or replacement. I suspect this will take a while. Good thing we have more than one bathroom.

We stopped by Lamcy Plaza last night. Lamcy is a unique mall, or was. It had truly eclectic decor. When you first walked in, you saw a waterfall that stretched over all three floors.

three floors of shopping mall with fake stone waterfall

To the right there was a robotic clown climbing up and down a rope. And, behind you, over the entrance was the Tower Bridge, a medieval castle also stretching up three floors.

I didn’t check for the clown last night, but I don’t remember seeing him and I think he may already be gone. The waterfall looked like this:

The signs said “coming soon” a new passager elevator. OH NO!

Get aboard the Emu Train. It goes lickety split.

These knock-off Barbies seem to be having costume malfunctions.

ceramic smurfs and red birds

For some unknown reason, the store had oodles of smurfs (and angry birds).

Including MacSmurf.

smurf wall hangings

And if ceramic smurfs aren’t enough, there are pictures to hang on your wall.

Plenty to choose from. There were also two poor employees in smurf suits out in the parking lot. In this heat, the thing you don’t want to be wearing is a blue furry suit and a big head.

In a desert where the temperature ranges from 75F to 120F, it’s important to have gloves, ear muffs, and furry caps.

2 doll houses

There’s a great new Khaleeji family doll house. Why they live in a wood frame house is a mystery. Apparently, their neighbors, the King and Queen have their own Jester.
